Phoebe is the only donkey born at the Sanctuary as her mother - Frances - was pregnant when we rescued her. Unfortunately due to Frances’s difficult previous life Phoebe was born with a poor immune system and very crumbly hooves which require regular treatment. Most of the winter she has to wear special boots to prevent infection. She was born on Shakespeare’s birthday 26 years ago, and was called Phoebe after the rustic character in ‘As You Like It’.
