The arrival of Thelma and Louise and Homer and Marge (October 23, 2009)
It has been something of an eventful week. Gravel was delivered for the lane down to the barn so- unlike last year- the volunteers' cars don't get stuck in the mud and the orchard was cleared of acorns (poisonous to most animals), rotivated and grass seeded in preparation for the arrival today of 2 sheep called Thelma and Louise along with 2 Pygmy goats named Homer and Marge.
The sheep, Dorset-Suffolk crosses, both have problems one- like Katie one of our other sheep- gets a prolapsed womb if she gets pregnant and the other has a damaged udder so without our intervention both would have ended up at the abbattoir. As for Homer and Marge the former is permanently lame with a heart condition and the other is older. All of them will be able hopefully to live out their natural lives with us.
More free range chickens due to be slaughtered tomorrow as their maximum egg laying period is deemed to be over arrive tomorrow. This happens at very regular intervals so if you would like to save any I will be happy to give the contact number- they are still very young and go on laying for years.They are also extremely friendly.
Enormous thanks are due too to all the volunteers who are helping to make the cattery, the gravel drive and the new grassy enclosure possible.
