Goodbye to Phoenix (October 17, 2009)
Sadly today, I have some bad news - we had to have poor Phoenix ,our old black cat, put down. He had originally belonged to an old lady of 82 and had come to us after her death. He had been given to us by another rescue centre because he was unhomeable as he was so vicious - hence the name Phoenix.
We had him for seven years and he turned out to be a normal (albeit large), lovely affectionate cat. However, over the past three days he had become very vicious and unapproachable although previously he would make "puddings"" on our laps and purr away. With the dramatic change in character I guessed that he was in pain, somehow managed to catch him by trapping him in his cat bed and putting it in a top-loader carrier and took him to the vet this morning .He proved so ferocious they had to sedate him with anaesthetic gas before they could get near him to examine him. Unfotunately, they found he had a badly arthritic leg, cystitis and cancer - we had noticed he had lost a great deal of weight in the last couple of months. Poor Phoenix he had been through a lot- he had half a tail and had had to have one eye removed recently and in spite of all that had always been very happy and affectionate with us. At least now he is out of pain.He was an old cat when he came to us but at least we gave him 7 good years when nobody else would have him.
As on of our oldest residents he will be very much missed by everyone at the sanctuary.
