Miss Matty lands on her feet. (August 31, 2009)Mixed news of Matty the grey fluffy Selkirk Rex cat. She is much, much better -so much so that we could certainly not contemplate putting her down. She was confined to my bathroom and although still blind was getting very adept at moving around without bumping into things. We were told that there was a 20 per cent chance she might regain her vision -caused by the anaesthetic for a dental- within 2 weeks. As she is only 4 years old and had had such a bad start in life as a breeder's cat in a cattery being fed rotten food we wanted to give her every chance of a decent future. She was becoming anxious to leave the confines of the bathroom but I feared if she was let out she might misjudge the stairs and go hurtling downwards. Anyway the good news is that Cathy one of our loyal and hardworking volunteers who has already taken on two other cats with problems from the sanctuary has taken on Matty as well. Now she has Paris who is deaf, Mandy who is allergic to sunshine and Matty who is blind. Or is she? That we cannot yet tell but considering she is in a totally new environment on the ground floor with a walled in garden she is walking around remarkably well without bumping into anything at all. Either her senses of hearing and sensitivity- possibly through her whiskers- have become finely tuned very quickly or there is a glimmer of hope that some sight has returned. However whatever the final outcome Matty is a very lucky cat and whether blind or not is now going to live a worthwhile pampered life.
